A broad green path rises through the centre of the landscape, bordered by dense vegetation and warmed by intermittent passages of beige earth. Trees gather more heavily at the upper left, while a pale, grey-blue sky opens to the right. Near the distant end of the path, a small dark figure supplies both a human presence and a delicate measure of scale.
This is an early work by an artist who would become one of the leading figures of German Expressionism and a prominent member of Der Blaue Reiter. Made before the First World War and before that group was established, the painting belongs to a period in which Macke was moving beyond straightforward naturalistic description. The Bonn landscape is still recognisably observed, yet its forms have begun to acquire a decorative independence: greens, blues and earth tones are organised not merely to record a place, but to give the scene a lively pictorial structure. The ordinary motif of a rural path thus becomes an arena for the colour relationships and simplified forms that would remain central to Macke’s art.
A closer look
The composition is built around the path’s quiet pull into depth. It enters broadly at the lower edge, where patches of green intermingle with warmer, exposed ground, then narrows as it approaches the softly defined horizon. Subtle shifts of tone suggest uneven light across its surface: pale beige flecks sit beside cooler green passages, while darker marks at the margins evoke clumps of grass and shadowed undergrowth. These irregular touches prevent the route from reading as a rigid geometric device; it feels worn into the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
On either side, vegetation is condensed into overlapping masses rather than described leaf by leaf. The left side is especially substantial, with trees silhouetted against the sky and fine, dark contours giving their crowns an organic, broken edge. Across the scene, broad strokes and dotted textures create movement within the greenery. Cool greens merge with muted blues, while restrained earth colours introduce warmth below. The resulting palette is bright without becoming strident, its contrasts softened by transitions between land, foliage and atmosphere.
The distant figure is easy to overlook. Positioned slightly away from the exact centre and rendered with soft edges, it acts as a visual hinge between the foreground path and the receding landscape. Its dark tone punctuates the surrounding greens, yet its smallness preserves the spaciousness of the setting. Beyond it, land and sky seem almost to meet in a veil of pale colour, allowing the background to dissolve rather than close the view.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
