A slender central stalk rises almost the full height of the plate, branching into a measured constellation of rounded buds. Yet the plant’s poise is tempered by its sharply divided foliage and prickly bracts: delicacy and defensiveness coexist in a study of unusual graphic clarity.
Redouté was among the foremost botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for reconciling scientific observation with compositional refinement. Here, the specimen is not treated as ornament alone. Its distinctive growth habit, leaf structure and branching pattern are presented legibly, reflecting the Enlightenment-era impulse to examine, classify and disseminate knowledge of the natural world. The association with Jean-Jacques Rousseau is especially apt: Rousseau’s writings on botany helped promote the subject as both a disciplined science and a form of attentive engagement with nature.
A closer look
The composition is built around the firm upward movement of the principal stem. Near the lower centre, elongated, sharply cut leaves spread out to give the plant visual weight, while the upper branches become progressively finer and more open. This transition from dense foliage below to airy branching above creates a natural rhythm across the otherwise spacious cream ground. The restrained negative space is integral to the plate, isolating each contour so that leaves and flower heads can be read without distraction.
Redouté differentiates the plant’s surfaces through finely controlled line and tonal variation. Darker greens gather along folds, veins and shadowed edges, while paler passages suggest the rounded form of the stalk and the slight turn of individual leaves. The serrated margins are carefully articulated, and fine prickles appear along parts of the upper foliage. Around the spherical flower heads, narrow pointed bracts radiate outwards, giving each compact form a subtly star-like silhouette.
There is also considerable variation within the apparent symmetry. The buds differ slightly in size and angle; side stems bend away from the central axis at uneven intervals; and the leaves alternately project, overlap and recede. These small irregularities prevent the specimen from becoming diagrammatic. At the lower centre, the printed inscription records Redouté and the Imprimerie de Langlès, together with the date December 1805, anchoring the botanical study within its original publishing context.

Botanical illustration at this period occupied a productive space between science and art. Such plates needed to preserve recognisable structures, yet their usefulness also depended on visual order: a specimen had to be separated from its surroundings, intelligently arranged and rendered with enough precision to reward comparison. Redouté’s particular distinction lay in making that clarity appear effortless. The pale, unencumbered field and carefully balanced silhouette allow the eye to move from the plant’s overall habit to minute features of venation, serration and growth.
This plate is especially compelling for the way it transforms a spiny, structurally complex plant into a lucid study without diminishing its strangeness. Its disciplined greens, fine contours and poised verticality exemplify Redouté’s ability to make close observation aesthetically absorbing, while retaining the identifying details on which botanical knowledge depends.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
