Two smaller buds rise towards the upper right, while serrated green leaves extend around the stem in a carefully balanced vertical arrangement. Against the spacious pale beige ground, every contour remains distinct: the flower appears luxuriant, yet the composition retains the disciplined clarity of a botanical study.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the early nineteenth century, a period in which botanical enquiry, horticultural cultivation and the taste for finely illustrated natural-history publications flourished together. Working in Paris and enjoying the patronage of prominent royal and imperial figures, he developed a manner that joined scientific observation to exceptional decorative poise. Roses became especially closely associated with his reputation. In studies such as this, identification depended upon close attention to the whole plant—not merely the bloom, but also its buds, sepals, leaf structure and thorned stem.
A closer look
The central rose is built from successive rings of petals, their colour shifting from deeper, warmer pink within the crowded interior to paler blushes along the outer edges. Fine linear shading follows the folds and slight crumpling of each petal rather than flattening the flower into a simple disc. The margins are gently uneven, giving the bloom a convincing delicacy and distinguishing one overlapping layer from the next.
Above and to the right, the two buds provide a quieter counterpoint to this abundance. Their petals remain partially enclosed by vivid green sepals, allowing the structure of the developing flowers to be read clearly. The contrast between bud and open rose gives the plate a subtle sense of progression: several moments in the plant’s flowering cycle are held together within a single, economical arrangement.
The foliage is particularly substantial towards the lower left, where broad leaves overlap and turn at slightly different angles. Their toothed edges, branching veins and tonal variations lend them weight beside the feather-soft petals. Smaller leaves weave around the main stem, and minute thorns interrupt its otherwise smooth ascent. These restrained details are essential to the botanical character of the study, while also producing a graceful rhythm of diagonals around the central bloom. At the lower edge, the French label Rosier de France a Pomme de Grenade anchors the specimen within the classificatory language of its period.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
