Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Indica Acuminata, published in 1817, presents a flowering rose stem with the clarity of a botanical specimen and the poise of a carefully judged composition. Pale, open blossoms are touched with pink along their petals, while clusters of serrated green leaves lend the plant greater visual weight. Set centrally against a spacious cream ground, the stem seems to unfold upwards across the page, its branching structure made immediately legible without losing its natural irregularity.
Redouté was among the defining botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Closely associated with the cultivated flowers of French royal and imperial gardens, he brought scientific observation and courtly refinement into unusually harmonious balance. Roses became one of his most celebrated subjects: their complex foliage, subtle variations of colour and horticultural variety offered ample scope for images that were both informative and decoratively accomplished. Here, the specimen is neither crowded by surrounding vegetation nor arranged as a conventional bouquet. It is isolated for study, following the botanical tradition, yet composed with a delicacy that allows it to stand equally as a work of floral art.
A closer look
The flowers occupy the upper and central parts of the design, their broad, lightly cupped petals moving from creamy white towards restrained blush-pink edges. Smooth tonal transitions give each petal a sense of pliancy, while faint shadows where blossoms overlap the leaves create a modest but convincing depth. The blooms are not treated as uniform ornaments: their different angles and degrees of openness suggest successive stages of flowering.
Beneath them, the foliage forms a denser network of stems and leaflets. A prominent leaf to the left displays sharply serrated margins and a clearly articulated vein structure. Across the plant, the greens range from pale, yellowish notes to cooler and more saturated tones; occasional reddish hints beneath the leaves prevent the foliage from becoming a single undifferentiated mass. Fine pale lines follow the veins, recording botanical structure while also producing an intricate linear pattern.
The generous negative space is essential to the plate’s character. It separates even the smallest offshoots from the background and allows the eye to follow the plant from the lower stem to its outermost leaves and blossoms. One especially discreet detail rewards close attention: a small insect rests upon the foliage, introducing a flicker of life into an otherwise precisely ordered study. Along the lower edge, the name Rosa Indica acuminata appears in fine, restrained lettering, preserving the classificatory purpose of the illustration without disturbing its visual balance.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a productive territory between art and science. Images needed to communicate the identifying features of a plant—its growth habit, leaf arrangement, flower form and colouring—but they also circulated within a culture fascinated by gardens, collecting and ornamental cultivation. Redouté’s particular achievement lay in making close description appear effortless. The plant remains recognisable as a specimen, yet its placement on the page has the rhythm and equilibrium of an independent composition.
Rosa Indica Acuminata exemplifies that union of precision and grace. Its appeal lies not in theatrical colour or elaborate setting, but in the accumulation of finely observed distinctions: a pink edge against a pale petal, the reddish underside of a leaf, the alternating density and openness of the branching stem. These quiet details explain why Redouté’s roses remain central to the history of botanical art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
