Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 95, published in 1827, brings together a rose, an anemone and a clematis in a carefully poised botanical arrangement. The rose occupies the upper centre, its softly blushing petals unfolding above the broader white anemone and the deep crimson clematis below. Rather than presenting the plants as isolated specimens, Redouté interweaves flowers, stems and leaves into a compact vertical composition, balancing botanical clarity with the grace of a formal bouquet.

Redouté was among the most admired flower illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His studies helped establish a distinctive form of botanical art in which close observation served both scientific interest and cultivated taste. Created for Choix des plus belles fleurs—a title meaning “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—this plate belongs to a period when European natural-history publishing combined the classification of plant life with an appetite for images of considerable decorative refinement. Redouté’s achievement lay in allowing neither purpose to overwhelm the other: each bloom remains recognisable and structurally convincing, yet the page is orchestrated with an artist’s sense of rhythm, contrast and repose.

A closer look

At the top of the composition, the pink rose acts as a gentle visual crown. Its petals deepen in colour towards their folds, producing a sequence of pale blush, warm pink and shaded rose. Tiny droplets rest on the flower’s surface, a closely observed detail that heightens the impression of freshness without distracting from the precise articulation of the petals. Around it, serrated green leaves tilt in different directions, their veins and tonal variations preventing the foliage from becoming a merely uniform backdrop.

The lower half is organised around a particularly effective contrast. On the left, the anemone opens into broad, pale petals surrounding a finely described green centre. Its expansive, almost circular form appears light against the softly tinted ground. To the right, the clematis is darker and denser: rich red petals turn and overlap around an intricate central structure, their defined edges giving the bloom greater graphic weight. The two flowers differ not only in colour but in visual tempo—the anemone broad and calm, the clematis tightly gathered and energetic.

Redouté uses the intervening stems and leaves to guide the eye between these three distinct centres of attention. The rose rises above the others, while the lower blooms spread laterally to stabilise the arrangement. Subtle overlaps create depth, but the pale, uncluttered background preserves the legibility of every contour. At the foot of the plate, the concise labels “Rose”, “Anemone” and “Clematide” return the decorative ensemble to its botanical purpose, naming the specimens without disturbing the spaciousness of the design.

Context and significance

Botanical illustration of this period occupied a productive territory between science and art. Accurate images could record characteristic forms, while elegant publications made flowers available for sustained study far beyond the garden or herbarium. In Redouté’s hands, leaves are not generic embellishments and petals are not simplified symbols: folds, veins, centres and growth patterns all receive individual attention. Yet the specimens are also edited into a harmonious page, showing how botanical knowledge could be communicated through sophisticated visual design.

Plate 95 is especially compelling for the conversation it creates between three very different flowers. The delicacy of the rose, the luminous openness of the anemone and the saturated depth of the clematis each retain their own character, while the surrounding greens bind them together. It is this union of exact observation and compositional elegance that gives Redouté’s flower studies their enduring distinction.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
