Violet blossoms unfold from a cluster of narrow green leaves, their rounded, translucent-looking petals set against a spacious cream ground. The strongest flower occupies the centre of the composition, where deep purple veining, a warm yellow throat and sharply articulated reproductive structures turn a seemingly modest bloom into an intricate study of colour and form.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical illustrators of his age, earning the epithet “the Raphael of flowers”. His plates united close observation with the refinement expected of early nineteenth-century flower books, publications that could function both as aids to botanical study and as cultivated objects of visual pleasure. The saffron crocus was an especially resonant subject: its vivid stigmas are the source of saffron, long valued as a spice and colouring material. At the foot of the plate, the Latin identification is paired with the French name Safran cultivé, anchoring the elegant arrangement in the language of botanical classification.
A closer look
The composition rises vertically from a compact base. Long, blade-like leaves sweep upwards, particularly at the right, establishing a taut linear rhythm around the softer curves of the flowers. Redouté uses their varying greens to prevent them from reading as a single flat mass: darker tones gather near the lower cluster, while paler passages along the blades suggest their changing angle and slenderness. The leaves also act as a framework, directing attention back towards the blossoms.
At the centre, the largest crocus opens broadly towards the viewer. Its petals shift from cool lavender to richer violet, with fine veins following each petal’s outward flare. Subtle tonal transitions indicate folds, overlaps and curling edges without sacrificing the clarity of the specimen. Within the flower, small accents of yellow and warmer colour form a concentrated point of detail. These minute structures are not treated as incidental decoration; their crisp definition reflects the observational purpose underlying Redouté’s graceful presentation.
Lower down, a smaller pinkish-purple bloom emerges among partially enclosed petals and leaves. This layering gives the plate a quiet sense of depth despite the restrained setting. Bud, open flower and foliage are gathered into a compact sequence, allowing different stages and structures to be compared within one harmonious design. The pale ground remains almost entirely unoccupied beyond the plant itself, so that every contour—from the widest petal to the thinnest leaf tip—retains its legibility.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
