Rather than organising the view around a single focal point, Macke spreads its interest across the horizontal composition: buildings, fences, hollows and rolling ground interlock like pieces of a loosely fitted mosaic.
Painted at a decisive moment in the development of German Expressionism, Sandgrube belongs to the period in which Macke was associated with Der Blaue Reiter. Artists in this circle moved beyond naturalistic description, treating colour and simplified form as active elements in their own right. Macke’s response was distinctive: his paintings often retain the recognisable structures of observed life while translating them into luminous, rhythmic arrangements. Here, a commonplace rural subject becomes a testing ground for the modern avant-garde, poised between direct observation and deliberate stylisation.
A closer look
The foreground is the painting’s most energetic zone. Rounded banks and excavated slopes overlap in bands of ochre, soft red, yellow and grass green, establishing depth without conventional modelling. Their contours carry the eye sideways as much as backwards, giving the terrain a restless, undulating rhythm. Near the lower centre, two compact areas of blue interrupt these warmer colours. Slight tonal variations within them suggest reflected light, yet their intense hue also allows them to function as emphatic blocks within the larger composition.
Towards the upper left, a small group of simplified buildings introduces a human scale. Their muted walls and sharply coloured red roofs stand apart from the surrounding greens, but Macke avoids making them the dominant subject. A darkly outlined fence in the middle ground performs a quieter structural role: its short linear accents cross the softer landforms, adding texture while helping to articulate the recession of the scene.
The upper-right cluster of trees is rendered in unexpectedly cool lilac and purple tones. Set against the warmer foreground, these abstracted forms create a chromatic counterweight to the buildings on the opposite side. Beyond them, a narrow dark-blue band marks the far distance, ambiguously suggesting water or a compressed horizon. Visible brush marks remain active around the edges and across the sloping ground, so that the surface never settles into stillness; colour appears laid down in responsive, layered passages rather than smoothed into an illusion of continuous space.
Context and significance
Macke was among the artists who helped shape German painting immediately before the First World War. Born in 1887, his career ended with his death in 1914, making works such as Sandgrube part of an unusually concentrated period of experimentation. His contribution to Expressionism lay not simply in heightened colour, but in his ability to reconcile modern pictorial construction with the visible world. Houses remain houses and hills remain hills, yet each is also treated as a distinct area of colour, contour and visual weight.
That balance gives Sandgrube its particular appeal. The subject is neither monumental nor picturesque: it is a worked, uneven landscape, shaped by banks, hollows and modest structures. Macke finds its interest in relationships—the cool blue pools against orange earth, violet trees against green ground, and taut fence lines against rolling contours. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
