Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s Vitrail pour la façade de la boutique Fouquet—a stained-glass design for the façade of the Fouquet boutique—concentrates its decorative drama within a circular frame. A woman’s head appears in profile, her finely outlined features surrounded by an abundant sweep of hair. Earthy browns, muted greens and warm beige are held together by a firm dark circumference, giving the composition the compact presence of a medallion while allowing its internal lines to unfurl with remarkable freedom.
Born in 1860, Mucha became one of the defining designers of the Belle Époque, particularly celebrated for compositions in which female figures, botanical ornament and lettering were woven into unified decorative schemes. The Fouquet project reveals the breadth of that practice. Mucha’s visual language was not confined to posters: it could move between graphic art, jewellery, furnishings, architecture and shopfront design. At the turn of the twentieth century, such commissions reflected an Art Nouveau ideal in which commercial spaces might be conceived as complete artistic environments rather than as neutral settings for merchandise.
A closer look
The face forms the still centre of the design. Its delicate contour is comparatively restrained, set against the more elaborate movement of the hair, which spreads around the head in layered ribbons and looping strands. Subtle tonal shifts prevent these brown forms from becoming a single mass: paler highlights pick out individual curves, while darker passages lend weight to the outer locks. Near the temple, a small leaf-like motif merges bodily adornment with botanical pattern, making it difficult to say where portraiture ends and ornament begins.
Behind the figure, a soft, even green establishes a calm field of colour. Its relative flatness sharpens the profile and allows the intricate linework above and behind the head to remain legible. Towards the lower right, a pale beige area introduces a warmer note and relieves the deeper browns. The palette is subdued rather than jewel-bright, relying on the relationship between warm hair, cool green and dark contour for its effect.
The circular format is essential to the image’s rhythm. The outer black border acts both as a frame and as a visual counterweight to the restless curves within it. Hair follows and answers the arc of the circumference, directing the eye repeatedly around the woman’s face. Although the design remains predominantly flat and graphic, overlapping strands and gentle gradations create a shallow sense of depth. The result is simultaneously intimate and architectural: a close-cropped profile conceived as part of a larger façade.
Context and significance
Art Nouveau sought to dissolve conventional boundaries between fine and applied art, bringing coordinated design into public and domestic life. Mucha’s contribution to that culture was distinguished by sinuous contour, carefully orchestrated pattern and the transformation of the human figure into a decorative structure. Here, the woman is not placed before an ornamental background; her hair actively generates the ornament, echoing the organic forms associated with the wider movement.
The connection with the Fouquet boutique also places the design within the sophisticated commercial culture of Belle Époque Europe, when architecture, display and graphic identity increasingly worked together. Even without typography or an overt advertising message, the roundel performs a recognisable function: it turns a shopfront element into an emblem. Its enduring interest lies in this fusion of portrait, pattern and architectural decoration—a concise demonstration of Mucha’s ability to make every line participate in a larger visual rhythm.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
