Muted pinks, warm cream and earthy brown are held together by emphatic dark outlines, giving the design both the softness of a decorative reverie and the structural clarity required of an architectural scheme.
The work belongs to the Belle Époque context in which Mucha’s art became closely identified with Art Nouveau. Although celebrated for his posters, the Czech artist worked across graphic design, jewellery, interiors and architectural decoration, treating ornament as something that could shape an entire environment. His association with the Fouquet jewellery boutique is especially revealing: here, the flowing vocabulary familiar from his commercial imagery is adapted to a façade, blurring distinctions between fine art, applied design and the fabric of the modern city.
A closer look
The composition draws the eye inward through a sequence of frames. A pale rectangular field surrounds the principal circular form, whose segmented border resembles a setting assembled from contrasting pieces. Broad areas of muted rose occupy parts of the outer design, while smaller passages of light blue and deep brown punctuate the warmer palette. Against these restrained colours, the near-black contours act almost like leading in stained glass, separating one ornamental shape from another and making the whole arrangement legible at a glance.
Within the circle, Mucha contrasts the calm modelling of the face with the restless movement of the hair. Fine curls loop around the head and shoulders, interspersed with small bead-like details; some locks form compact coils, while others lengthen into sinuous lines that merge visually with the garment below. Subtle shading gives the cheeks, eyelids and neck a gentle volume, but the surrounding forms remain broadly flat and patterned. The figure consequently appears suspended between portrait and ornament, her body integrated into the design rather than set against a conventional background.
The lower portion is carried by long, smooth curves suggesting folded fabric or a cloak gathered around the shoulders. These soft contours answer the elaborate hair above, while the border’s repeated squares provide a measured counter-rhythm. Mucha’s characteristic control lies in this balance: organic lines seem to unfold freely, yet every curve is contained within a highly ordered circular geometry.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
