Thomas Moran (1837–1926), a British-born American painter associated with the great landscape tradition of the 19th century, helped define how the world visualized the American West. His art—emotionally resonant and meticulously observed—bridged art and nation-building, shaping public appreciation for places like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. By 1912, after years of return visits and a formal relationship with the Santa Fe Railroad, Moran’s Canyon imagery had become iconic shorthand for the drama of the Southwest.

This particular view holds special historical resonance. Commissioned and published by the Santa Fe to promote travel to the Canyon, it is among the largest and most dramatic prints of Moran’s career. The railroad sponsored “artist’s excursions” from 1901 to 1912 and exchanged travel for paintings, helping Moran study the site at length. The resulting chromolithograph was distributed as a prestigious promotional gift—many early examples suffered from poor framing or exposure, while carefully stored impressions survived in pristine condition, underscoring its status as both artwork and artifact of America’s early tourism era.

Artistically, the print captivates through contrasts: iron-rich reds and siennas meet the silvery blues of a clearing sky; sunlit escarpments break abruptly into violet-shadowed ravines. This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white).
