Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s The Times of the Day – Evening Contemplation, created in 1899, personifies dusk as a poised young woman enclosed within a tall, richly ornamented frame. Known in the design itself by the French title Rêverie du soir, the panel belongs to a series of four colour lithographs in which successive hours are paired with graceful female figures and changing seasonal landscapes. Here, evening takes on an autumnal character: muted greens, earthy browns and softly glowing orange tones gather around the figure, while the enclosing structure rises like a slender Gothic window.
The series appeared at the height of Mucha’s success during the Parisian fin de siècle. The Czech artist had developed a visual language so distinctive that it became closely identified with Art Nouveau itself: elongated formats, sinuous contour lines, abundant botanical ornament and idealised figures whose hair and clothing participate in the surrounding pattern. Such designs helped dissolve the boundary between illustration, poster art and interior decoration. In Evening Contemplation, however, Mucha’s decorative richness is held in unusually quiet balance. Rather than advertising a performance or product, the composition gives visual form to a state of reverie.
A closer look
The woman occupies the central foreground but sits subtly off the composition’s axis, preventing the arrangement from becoming rigidly symmetrical. Her flowing garment falls in long, gentle folds, catching warm light against the cooler and more subdued foliage behind her. Soft curls frame her pale face, and her reflective pose establishes the unhurried rhythm of the scene. The surrounding negative space is equally important: it allows the silhouette of her body and clothing to remain clear even amid the dense decorative detail.
Along the left side, leafy vines intertwine with the architectural border, linking the human figure to the natural setting. Repeated floral forms continue across the upper edge, while trees and foliage on the right recede in softened, muted tones. Mucha layers these elements just enough to imply a landscape beyond, yet preserves the essential flatness of the design. Strong outlines, broad areas of colour and carefully controlled overlaps keep the composition legible as graphic art rather than conventional pictorial illusion.
At the lower edge, the words RÊVERIE du SOIR are set in restrained serif lettering. The typography provides a firm horizontal base beneath the upward movement of stems, drapery and border. Small variations among the leaves prevent the ornament from feeling mechanical, while the contrast between warm highlights and cooler green shadows gives the autumn palette a subdued luminosity appropriate to fading daylight.
Context and significance
Mucha’s women are often remembered for their elegance, but their relationship to the surrounding design is just as characteristic. Hair, fabric, flowers and framing devices are treated as interconnected rhythms, allowing the figure to serve simultaneously as a person, an allegory and the centre of an elaborate pattern. In The Times of the Day, this approach turns an abstract progression—morning to night—into a sequence of moods grounded in season, landscape and colour.
Evening Contemplation is especially compelling for the restraint with which these elements are combined. Its autumn setting never becomes merely descriptive, and its ornament does not overwhelm the figure. Instead, the entire vertical composition seems to slow towards stillness: foliage darkens, colours soften and the contemplative woman holds the final light of day within Mucha’s flowing linear framework.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x14in (90x35cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
