Alphonse Mucha’s The Times of the Day – Night’s Rest, created in 1899, presents sleep as an elegant female allegory enclosed within an ornate, Gothic-window-like frame. The reclining woman rests her head upon folded arms, her pale gown settling around her in long, softly articulated folds. Behind her, a wintry landscape recedes into dusky blue and subdued green, while floral ornament climbs the narrow borders. Figure, season and setting combine to create a nocturnal scene that feels hushed rather than dark.

The panel belongs to a four-part lithographic series devoted to morning, day, evening and night, each moment embodied by a graceful female figure. This union of the human form with natural cycles is characteristic of Mucha’s decorative imagination. One of the defining artists of European Art Nouveau, he developed a distinctive visual language of sinuous contours, abundant botanical motifs and carefully integrated lettering. Here, those elements serve no commercial narrative: they transform an hour of the day into a self-contained poetic mood, shaped by the decorative richness of the Belle Époque.

A closer look

The composition is unusually intimate. Mucha places the woman slightly off-centre, allowing the curve of her body and the sweep of her drapery to interrupt the panel’s strict verticality. Her flowing hair echoes the fabric beneath her, creating a succession of soft lines around the face and shoulders. Gentle highlights pick out her features and the upper folds of the gown, while the surrounding browns and cool greens remain muted. The effect is one of gradual visual quietening, as though the colour itself were settling towards sleep.

Beyond the figure, faint trees and bare branches emerge through a pale, atmospheric distance. The suggestion of a moon in the upper background introduces a cool point of light, but the landscape is deliberately restrained: it functions less as a fully described place than as a winter counterpart to the woman’s repose. Slight tonal variations imply depth without breaking the shallow, decorative space that is central to the design.

The border rewards equally close attention. Intertwined floral forms rise along the sides and gather around the upper corners, where pointed shapes reinforce the resemblance to Gothic tracery. Darker brown inner bands separate this elaborate framework from the softer scene within. At the lower centre, the French title REPOS de la NUIT is set in an elegant serif typeface, its measured geometry balancing the organic movement above; Mucha’s signature appears more discreetly at the lower right. Typography, ornament and figure are conceived as parts of a single graphic structure rather than independent additions.

Context and significance

Mucha’s work helped make the elongated decorative panel one of the most recognisable formats of fin-de-siècle graphic art. His women are often surrounded by flowers, patterned borders and architectural framing, yet they occupy spaces governed by design rather than ordinary perspective. In Night’s Rest, the frame does more than embellish the subject: it separates this allegorical realm from the everyday world and gives the passing hour the formality of a devotional or architectural image.

Seen within The Times of the Day, the panel belongs to a larger meditation on rhythm and transition. Its winter setting, reclining pose and restrained palette distinguish night from the more active phases of the cycle, while Mucha’s flowing line maintains continuity across the series. The result is a particularly quiet expression of Art Nouveau—richly ornamented, yet controlled, with every contour contributing to the atmosphere of restorative stillness.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x14in (90x35cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
