Henry Jerome Schile’s Village Beer Girl, Bock Beer, created in 1885, places a smiling beer vendor at the centre of a compact, warmly coloured advertisement. She carries two brimming glass mugs, their pale froth catching the light against the browns and ochres of her dress. Beside her stands a goat, close enough to act almost as a companion, while the emphatic words ‘BOCK BEER’ anchor the scene below. The result is both a genre picture and an immediately legible commercial design: character, refreshment and lettering brought together in a single lively tableau.

Schile, an American artist born in 1829, frequently drew upon everyday life and familiar social types rather than elevated historical themes. Here, the vendor’s costume, open expression and confident handling of the beer make her less an anonymous emblem than a recognisable figure from popular visual culture. The goat adds more than rustic charm. ‘Bock’ is also the German word for a male goat, and goat imagery became closely associated with bock beer in advertising and label design. Schile turns that linguistic connection into a memorable visual motif, allowing the animal to identify the drink even before the bold caption is read.

A closer look

The woman occupies most of the upright composition, her head, shoulders and raised mugs forming its brightest and most animated area. Golden hair is carefully arranged beneath a flower-trimmed headband, while decorative seams, lace and folded fabric give her costume a wealth of small detail. Her arms extend to either side, creating a broad, welcoming gesture. The pair of mugs also introduces a pleasing near-symmetry, though the surrounding objects keep the arrangement from feeling rigid.

At the right, the goat turns its head slightly outwards, its pale, textured coat standing apart from the deeper tones of the woman’s clothing. A wooden barrel appears at the left, reinforcing the beer-selling setting and balancing the animal across the composition. The space is deliberately shallow: figure, goat and barrel are pressed towards the foreground, where they can be understood quickly. Behind them, softly graded beige and earthy colour provides atmosphere without distracting from the principal subjects.

Schile’s palette is dominated by warm brown, amber and muted orange, enlivened by smaller notes of green, blue and yellow. Highlights on the vendor’s face and the glass mugs sharpen the contrast between the illuminated details and the darker folds of her dress. At the lower edge, the large lettering operates as part of the composition rather than a separate caption. Its visual weight gives the poster a firm base and converts the cheerful scene above into a direct statement of what is being offered.

Context and significance

Village Beer Girl, Bock Beer belongs to a nineteenth-century commercial culture in which advertising often borrowed the narrative appeal of genre art. Instead of presenting the beverage alone, the design constructs a small social world around it: a personable seller, rustic accessories, generous servings and a humorous animal emblem. Such images depended upon instant recognition, but they could still reward prolonged looking through costume, expression and anecdotal detail.

The print is particularly engaging for the way it combines everyday labour with theatrical presentation. The vendor is ostensibly at work, yet her pose is carefully staged, and the foaming mugs are displayed almost ceremonially. Schile’s straightforward composition makes the message unmistakable, while the goat, floral headband and richly described clothing preserve the decorative exuberance of late nineteenth-century popular illustration.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the undefined version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
