Bock Bier, created by the American firm Wittemann Bros. in 1882, turns a beer advertisement into a scene of cheerful commotion. A tightly packed crowd of men reaches towards a raised drinking mug, their eager faces, outstretched hands and jostling poses gathering around the rounded form of a barrel. At the lower right stands the design’s comic counterweight: a goat, alert and unexpectedly self-possessed amid the surrounding bustle. Warm browns, soft yellows and flashes of orange give the composition the convivial glow of a crowded tavern.

The goat is more than an amusing mascot. Bock is a strong beer associated with the German brewing tradition, and the word Bock also means a billy goat in German; brewers and advertisers consequently adopted the animal as a memorable visual pun. Made at a time when vivid commercial lithography was increasingly used to promote food and drink to urban consumers, the design belongs to a flourishing late nineteenth-century culture of pictorial advertising. Rather than relying on lettering alone, Wittemann Bros. gives the beverage a cast of characters and a miniature comic drama.

A closer look

The action is concentrated in the foreground, where faces and gestures overlap in a dense, almost theatrical arrangement. Men in varied hats crane forward from the upper left, while others press in from behind, each distinguished by a different expression: expectation, delight, impatience or open-mouthed excitement. Spectacles, wrinkles, moustaches and the folds of coats provide small points of characterisation. The many reaching hands are especially effective, creating a visual rhythm that leads towards the beer mug and makes the crowd appear to surge across the page.

Below them, the barrel anchors the movement with its broad curve, visible wood grain and horizontal metal bands. Its substantial shape contrasts with the angular elbows and animated fingers above. The goat occupies a clearer pocket of space on the right, its textured fur set against the smoother modelling of the human faces and clothing. This division gives the animal particular prominence: it is part of the scene, yet also reads instantly as the emblematic “bock” of the title.

The pale, lightly detailed background keeps attention on the figures, while the palette unifies their varied costumes. Beige and warm grey establish the base; orange, muted green and soft yellow enliven hats, garments and highlighted faces without disturbing the overall warmth. At the lower centre, the words “Bock Bier” appear in bold, ornate lettering. Their decorative energy matches the crowd above, ensuring that the product name functions both as information and as part of the spectacle.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising often depended upon immediacy: a poster had to be legible at a glance, memorable in its imagery and closely associated with pleasure or sociability. Bock Bier achieves this through caricature-like expression and unusually compressed action. Its flat areas of colour give the design graphic force, while softer tonal transitions across cheeks, coats and the goat’s coat lend the scene enough detail to reward closer inspection.

The result is an advertisement with the narrative richness of a comic illustration. Its appeal lies not only in the period branding, but in the way Wittemann Bros. orchestrates appetite itself: every gaze, hand and tilted body points towards the coveted drink. The goat, meanwhile, completes the joke with quiet efficiency, making the brewing term visible even before the ornate title is read.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
