Henry Jerome Schile’s Bock Beer, mountain bock of 1884 makes its appeal through an immediate visual pun: a formidable mountain goat stands in for the beer named below. The animal’s head fills the upright composition, its dark, thick coat and deeply set eyes framed by immense curling horns. Warm browns and burnt orange are set against a pale beige ground, giving the design both graphic clarity and a genial, theatrical character.

Schile, an American artist born in 1829, worked at a time when vividly illustrated commercial prints competed for attention in an increasingly crowded urban marketplace. Here the familiar association between bock beer and the goat becomes the organising idea. The connection is linguistic as well as visual: Bock means “goat” in German, and the animal became a recurrent emblem in advertising for this style of beer. Schile turns that convention into something unusually direct, allowing the goat to function almost as a mascot, portrait subject and brand message at once.

A closer look

The horns establish the poster’s structure. Rising from either side of the head, they curve outwards and upwards in a near-symmetrical sweep, drawing the eye towards the upper corners before returning it to the animal’s face. Their ridged surfaces are carefully articulated, contrasting with the denser, softer texture of the fur around the forehead and neck. The close cropping increases the sense of scale: this is not a distant creature in a mountain landscape, but a commanding presence pressed forward into the viewer’s space.

Within that bold silhouette, Schile introduces quieter modelling. Small highlights break across the darker coat, while soft shading around the muzzle gives the face weight and volume. The eyes sit beneath the horns’ heavy bases and bring an unexpectedly watchful expression to the otherwise playful conceit. Against the largely unmodulated beige background, these concentrated passages of dark brown appear particularly forceful.

The words “Bock Bier” occupy the lower portion in large, emphatic lettering. Their scale ensures that the joke is understood instantly, yet the typography does not displace the animal as the principal attraction. A decorative border and faint scrollwork near the bottom add an ornamental flourish, linking the text and illustration within a single compact design. The hierarchy is economical and effective: goat first, name second, association complete.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising often relied on memorable characters, abundant ornament and easily recognised symbols rather than extended explanation. Schile’s design belongs to that persuasive visual culture, but its restraint is part of its strength. There is no busy tavern scene or elaborate narrative; instead, one enlarged animal and two bold words carry the entire proposition. The combination of close observation and comic wordplay gives the poster a distinctive personality, while its warm, limited palette holds illustration, typography and decoration together. It remains an engaging example of how nineteenth-century commercial art could make a product memorable through wit, economy and a strongly conceived central figure.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
