Paul Scheurich’s Winterhuder Bier of 1911 centres its appeal on a marvellously self-possessed gentleman: top-hatted, dark-coated and holding a generous mug of foaming beer. The drink’s warm amber-gold colour is echoed in his buttons and in the surrounding browns and yellows, while the near-black costume gives the figure a strong, immediately legible silhouette. Behind him, a window opens onto a greatly simplified townscape, but the setting remains shallow and theatrical; character, brand and beverage occupy the same compact visual stage.

Created at a moment when German commercial art was increasingly favouring bold colour, simplified forms and rapid visual communication, the poster balances advertisement with character study. Scheurich, born in 1883, was a versatile German artist whose careful draftsmanship was frequently allied to expressive, decorative design. Here that combination is particularly effective: the beer is made conspicuous without being isolated from the social world around it. The name refers to Winterhude, now a district of Hamburg, giving the advertisement a distinct local identity rather than the anonymity of a generic beverage campaign.

A closer look

The composition is organised around a series of emphatic dark and light shapes. Scheurich places the gentleman almost squarely in the foreground, his black coat forming the poster’s visual anchor. Against this broad mass, small details become unusually vivid: yellow buttons punctuate the front of the garment, the hand curls around the mug, and dark rings mark the fingers. The beer itself receives the brightest treatment, with pale highlights across the frothy head bringing the glass forward and making it the natural focus of the figure’s gesture.

At the upper left, the words “Winterhuder Bier” establish the subject in bold lettering before the eye descends towards the drink. On the opposite side, a compact trademark device and the inscription “Eigentum der Winterhuder Bierbrauerei” — identifying it as the property of the Winterhude brewery — give the design a more formal commercial register. Text and illustration are not treated as separate zones: the lettering occupies the same flattened pictorial field as the figure, creating a concise hierarchy in which name, spokesman and product can be grasped almost at once.

The surroundings are deliberately economical. Buildings visible beyond the window are reduced to outlined blocks and a stylised silhouette, suggesting an urban or market setting without competing for attention. Beside the gentleman, an elegantly curved chair introduces a decorative counter-rhythm to the rigid coat and upright hat. These abbreviated details convey the atmosphere of a tavern while preserving the clarity essential to a poster intended to work quickly and at a distance.

Context and significance

Winterhuder Bier belongs to an early twentieth-century culture in which posters transformed streets, cafés and places of entertainment into arenas for modern graphic design. Rather than relying on extensive written persuasion, artists increasingly compressed an advertisement into memorable contours, limited palettes and a single dominant motif. Scheurich’s design follows that principle while retaining a degree of narrative charm: the gentleman is not merely an accessory to the product, but a carefully constructed social presence whose formal attire lends the scene wit and distinction.

What continues to make the poster engaging is its economy. A top hat, a dark coat, a window, a chair and one bright mug are enough to establish both setting and tone. The result is commercially direct yet visually urbane, shaped by the crisp decorative intelligence of German graphic art in the years immediately before the First World War.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
