Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s La Femme Animee en Fleur (Lys), created in 1898, entwines a serene female figure with an abundant growth of lilies. The composition rises through an unusually slender vertical format: pale flowers cluster densely below, leaves and stems climb around the woman’s body, and delicate botanical forms reach towards the upper corners. Soft greens, muted pinks and warm cream are held together by Mucha’s precise, flowing outlines, giving the lithograph on silk both graphic clarity and an almost weightless refinement.
Made at the height of the Belle Époque, the work belongs to the visual world with which the Czech-born Mucha became closely identified in fin-de-siècle Paris. His widely circulated posters and decorative designs helped establish a distinctive vocabulary of Art Nouveau: elongated figures, rhythmic contours, luxuriant plants and ornament derived from natural forms. Mucha’s women are rarely isolated portraits in the conventional sense. Instead, figure, hair, fabric and foliage are organised as parts of a unified design, so that the human presence appears inseparable from the surrounding pattern.
A closer look
At the centre, the woman’s calm expression provides a still point within the upward movement of the composition. Her flowing hair is articulated with fine, curving lines and subtle highlights, while her simple garment shifts gently from beige to ecru. Rather than creating a strongly modelled, three-dimensional body, Mucha relies on contour and shallow tonal transitions. The result is a poised figure that seems to emerge from the lilies rather than stand before them.
The flowers supply the richest concentration of detail. In the lower foreground, white and softly pink petals overlap in a lush, compressed arrangement, their varied shapes preventing the pattern from becoming mechanically repetitive. Fine veins run through individual blooms, gentle shading gives selected petals a suggestion of volume, and lightly drawn leaves create further layers around the figure. Towards the upper edges, the floral forms become more open and delicate, allowing the pale beige ground to show through.
This alternation between density and space is central to the design. The strongest botanical mass sits below and around the woman, while the quieter background keeps the silhouette legible. Fine dark outlines distinguish figure from flower without breaking their visual continuity, and a narrow border gives the elongated arrangement a final measure of structure. In the lower right corner, Mucha’s signature is incorporated discreetly into the composition rather than competing with its ornamental rhythm.
Context and significance
Art Nouveau sought to dissolve the boundaries between fine art, illustration and decorative design, bringing line, pattern and natural imagery into a coherent visual language. Mucha’s work became one of its most recognisable expressions. His sinuous contours were not merely embellishments: they controlled the viewer’s eye, linking locks of hair to stems, drapery to leaves and the human figure to the larger geometry of the page.
In La Femme Animee en Fleur (Lys), the lily is therefore both subject and compositional framework. Its upright stems echo the narrow format, while its spreading petals soften and complicate that vertical emphasis. The restrained palette and even illumination keep the effect gentle, yet the structure is highly deliberate. What initially appears to be an idealised floral figure gradually reveals itself as an intricate study in balance—between flatness and volume, profusion and restraint, botanical observation and decorative invention.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x36in (40x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
