Woodcock Whiskey, created by Wells & Hope Co. in 1882, builds an elaborate commercial identity around two woodcock birds set among flowers, grasses and dense foliage. One bird rises through the centre with wings extended, while the other remains close to the ground, its long bill and mottled plumage picked out in fine detail. Above them, the brand name appears in commanding ornamental lettering, uniting natural-history imagery with the visual theatre of late nineteenth-century advertising.

The design belongs to an era when American trade labels and advertisements had to perform several roles at once: identifying a product, distinguishing it from its competitors and suggesting its character at a glance. Wells & Hope Co. gives the whiskey an unusually rich pictorial setting, using the woodcock not merely as a name but as a memorable graphic emblem. Warm oranges, browns and golds lend the composition a sense of abundance, while the birds and flowers introduce the meticulous observation associated with period illustration. The result is both practical branding and an ornate Victorian image in its own right.

A closer look

The two birds form the composition’s central axis, yet their contrasting poses keep the arrangement lively rather than rigid. The airborne woodcock opens the design upwards, its fanned feathers articulated with alternating dark marks and pale highlights. Below, the second bird is anchored among individual blades of grass and uneven earth. Its quieter profile provides a visual counterweight to the movement overhead, while delicate shading separates both bodies from the warm, softly modulated background.

Vegetation presses in from the sides without overwhelming the birds. A cluster of red flowers in the lower left supplies the strongest accent of colour, standing sharply against muted greens, soft beige and tawny brown. Veining is visible within the petals, while leaves and stems overlap to create a layered, almost enclosed habitat. Faint contours farther back suggest a more distant landscape, allowing the setting to recede beyond the closely observed foreground.

The typography is part of the illustration rather than a detached caption. “Woodcock Whiskey” curves prominently across the upper area in bold, decorative serif forms, its visual weight balancing the intricacy below. At the lower right, the name “Applegate Distilling Co.” supplies the commercial identification in a smaller label-like element. Border ornament around the edges completes the structure, turning the natural scene into a carefully contained advertising design.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising frequently drew upon imagery associated with nature, hunting, abundance and cultivated taste. Here, the choice of woodcocks creates an immediate correspondence between word and picture: the brand can be understood even before every line of lettering has been read. Such direct visual association was especially effective on trade labels, where recognition needed to be rapid and the design memorable among many competing goods.

What distinguishes this 1882 composition is the balance between description and display. The feathers, petals and grasses reward close attention, but the larger arrangement remains bold and readily legible. Its warm palette, emphatic lettering and decorative enclosure speak clearly of Victorian commercial graphics, while the poised relationship between the two birds gives the advertisement an appealing narrative tension—one creature grounded, the other caught at the instant of flight.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
