The arrangement is asymmetrical yet carefully balanced: warm colour moves upwards through the composition, and overlapping stems, petals and leaves give the botanical specimens an unusual sense of abundance.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, celebrated for reconciling scientific observation with courtly refinement. His career unfolded during a period of intense European interest in botany, plant classification and horticultural collecting. Created for Choix des plus belles fleurs, this plate belongs to a tradition in which flowers were presented not merely as decorative subjects, but as objects worthy of exact and sustained study. Redouté’s images answered both purposes: they clarified structure while preserving the sensuous qualities of colour, texture and growth.
A closer look
The yellow rose forms the composition’s visual centre of gravity. Its broad petals curl gently away from the heart of the bloom, their colour shifting from a stronger golden yellow in the folded recesses to paler tones along the highlighted edges. Above and to the right, a fully opened pink rose offers a more intricate rhythm. Numerous petals gather in close layers, shaded from blush pink to deeper rose, so that the flower appears both precise in construction and softly illuminated.
Redouté surrounds these principal blooms with different stages of development. At the lower left, pointed buds in red and green emerge among the leaves, their compact outlines contrasting with the expansive open flowers. This progression from closed bud to mature bloom gives the plate a quiet botanical logic: the rose is not represented as a single ideal specimen, but through several moments in its growth. Smaller blossoms and partially opened forms also bridge the strong yellow and pink passages, preventing either colour from overwhelming the whole.
The foliage is more than a supporting frame. Dark, serrated leaves spread around and behind the flowers, with visible veins and subtle tonal variation establishing their particular structure. Their cooler greens sharpen the warmth of the blossoms, while the pale cream ground leaves generous breathing space around the outermost stems. At the lower edge, the finely inscribed identification — “Rosa lutea & Rosa Indica (Var.)” — returns the luxuriant arrangement to its classificatory purpose. Fine contours and softly graduated colour together create volume without sacrificing clarity.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
