Rounded, cup-like blossoms gather among long green leaves, while narrow brownish-red sepals introduce sharper points above the soft curves of the flowers. Against the pale beige ground, every contour remains distinct: vivid yellow, layered green and restrained touches of russet form a composition at once botanically attentive and decoratively assured.
The plate belongs to Choix des plus belles fleurs—a title meaning “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—produced during a period when finely illustrated botanical books occupied both scientific and cultivated domestic worlds. Redouté was among the leading botanical artists of his era, admired for combining close observation with exceptional compositional grace. Rather than treating the specimen as a diagram alone, he arranged stems, leaves and blossoms so that botanical information became an elegant study in rhythm, balance and colour.
A closer look
The brightest flowers occupy the central area, their yellow petals built from subtle tonal shifts rather than a single flat hue. Deeper shading gathers towards the bases of the blooms, giving the cupped forms a sense of volume, while lighter passages along their rounded edges suggest an even, diffused illumination. Small dark markings and the pointed sepals add complexity to what first appears to be a simple cluster of yellow.
The foliage supplies the plate’s underlying structure. Elongated leaves rise and curve around the blossoms, some enclosing the cluster from the left, others extending upwards to frame it. Fine veins run through their surfaces, and changes from deep green to softer olive distinguish overlapping forms. The stem remains visible below the principal group, anchoring the abundant upper growth and allowing the complete plant to read as a coherent botanical specimen.
Redouté makes careful use of empty space. The warm, nearly unmarked background isolates the plant without making it appear rigid, while the generous margins preserve the delicacy of the outermost leaves. At the lower centre appears the caption “Sabo des Alpes”; “P.J. Redouté.” is inscribed at lower left, with “Langlois” at lower right. These small lines of lettering sit discreetly beneath the plant, leaving the visual hierarchy firmly with the flowers.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at the point where botanical classification, horticultural interest and refined book illustration met. His best-known flower studies are distinguished not simply by accuracy, but by their ability to clarify a plant’s character through selection and arrangement. Leaves are separated sufficiently to reveal their shape and veining; blossoms are turned to show differences of profile; and colour is modulated to describe texture as well as appearance.
Plate 102 exemplifies that union of natural history and decorative art. Its subject is richly foliated, yet never crowded; its colours are bright, yet carefully controlled. Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
