Published with a 2000 imprint from 1994 survey data, the USGS “Hudson Quadrangle” captures a precise late-twentieth-century portrait of Hudson, Ohio, and its surrounding landscapes. At the classic 1:24,000 scale, this topographical sheet presents the city not merely as a place name, but as an intricate fabric of streets, neighborhoods, waterways, wooded areas, and civic spaces. Hudson sits at the heart of the composition, with nearby Stow and Kent anchoring the broader regional context. Roads such as S.O.M. Center Road, North Main Street, North Hayward Road, and Ohio State Route 91 help reveal the area’s patterns of movement, settlement, and suburban expansion at a moment when Northeast Ohio was continuing to evolve beyond its older industrial and rural identities.

The U.S. Geological Survey brought to this map the disciplined clarity that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, hikers, historians, and collectors alike. Founded in 1879, the USGS became one of America’s great cartographic institutions, combining field survey, scientific measurement, and standardized design into maps of remarkable authority. In the “Hudson Quadrangle,” that tradition is visible in the careful layering of contour lines, hydrography, road networks, boundaries, and built environments. The map’s color scheme distinguishes woodland, developed land, water, and relief with understated precision, allowing the viewer to read both the human and natural landscape at once. It is a document of utility, certainly, but also one of quiet visual elegance.

Hudson itself is especially compelling on this sheet, a historic Western Reserve community whose gridded streets, residential districts, schools, parks, and surrounding open spaces speak to both nineteenth-century origins and twentieth-century growth. The map records the city’s relationship to its neighboring communities, particularly Stow to the south and Kent to the southeast, while smaller roads and subdivision patterns reveal the changing character of the suburban fringe. The inclusion of features such as Lake Elise, local parks, and residential enclaves gives the map a richly local texture. Even modest details—road bends, neighborhood edges, and marked ruins or historical remnants—invite close study, suggesting layers of habitation and memory beneath the modern mapped surface.

The Cuyahoga River, one of Northeast Ohio’s defining waterways, adds a powerful geographic and historical dimension to the quadrangle. Its course through the surrounding region helped shape settlement, transportation, industry, and conservation, and its presence on the map connects Hudson to a much larger watershed story. The river’s valleys and associated lowlands are made legible through the USGS contour system, where closely spaced lines mark steeper slopes and gentler intervals indicate broader, flatter ground. These topographic cues reveal why roads follow certain routes, why neighborhoods cluster where they do, and how natural drainage and elevation subtly govern the built environment. The map thus transforms familiar suburban Ohio into a measured landscape of ridges, streams, and terrain.

As a historical document, the “Hudson Quadrangle” offers a valuable snapshot of land use around 1994, just before another wave of development reshaped many communities in the Cleveland-Akron corridor. Comparing its road patterns, open spaces, residential areas, and civic landmarks with the present day reveals changes in growth, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship. Connections to broader regional movement—including routes leading toward Akron, Canton, and their airport infrastructure—place Hudson within a wider network of travel and commerce. Yet the sheet remains intimate in scale, attentive to small parks, local roads, water bodies, and traces of older features. It is both scientific record and historical portrait: a refined cartographic study of place at a precise moment in time.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
