Entitled Cádiz, this 1901 chorographic map by Alberto Martín presents the province with a clarity and coloristic finesse emblematic of early twentieth-century Spanish cartography. Executed in chromolithography and framed by graduated margins, it synthesizes landscape and polity into a lucid portrait of a region poised between Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds. Towns and cities are ranked with measured hierarchy, while a refined cartouche lends a ceremonious air, signaling the work’s scholarly ambition and decorative poise. Routes, rivers, and relief rise into legibility through a subtle orchestration of hues and line weights, allowing the eye to traverse from the Bay of Cádiz to the serried interior without losing orientation. As a provincial study, Cádiz captures a moment when modern infrastructure and historical identity were being simultaneously mapped.

Alberto Martín, a Barcelona-based publisher-cartographer of keen editorial vision, situates this sheet within his Provinces of Spain: Collection of Chorographic Maps, a benchmark series that married exacting survey with approachable design. The same cartographic intelligence would see Cádiz incorporated into the Ibero-American Geographical Atlas: Spain and Regional Spain, collaborations that sought a coherent national portrait from diverse regional textures. Martín’s studio favored legibility without austerity: the palette clarifies rather than distracts, the relief shading and waterlines speak with precision, and the typographic scale expresses civic importance at a glance. The result is a balanced union of science and style—an atlas leaf that reads as both evidence and elegy.

The province’s physiography emerges in abundant detail: mountain chains and folded valleys press westward from the limestone heights, while gentler plains open to the sea. Rivers are clearly traced, their courses threading agricultural basins before widening into estuaries—most notably around the Bay of Cádiz, where tidal marshes and inlets articulate a labyrinthine waterfront. The coast unfurls from ocean-facing strands to the wind-swept approaches of the Strait, where headlands and coves punctuate a strategic littoral. Inland, the cartographer’s treatment of relief suggests both elevation and texture, enabling one to read watersheds, passes, and probable routes as the terrain itself would compel them. Lakes and seasonal wetlands are annotated with care, marking hydrologic features that shaped settlement, cultivation, and the movement of goods.

Human geography is rendered with equal deliberation. Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, Algeciras, San Fernando, La Línea de la Concepción, and El Puerto de Santa María anchor the provincial network, their prominence calibrated through distinct letterforms and symbol sizes. Administrative boundaries are sharpened by confident linework, setting municipal jurisdictions into firm relation with the land they govern. Railways and principal roads are crisply delineated, the former tying port, vineyard, and frontier into a modern circuit, the latter fanning into local paths that preserve older patterns of exchange. A table of symbols unpacks this visual language with didactic clarity, while a measured scale invites the reader to translate distance into time, trade, and terrain—turning the sheet into a practical itinerary of the province.

At the head of the composition, the provincial coat of arms—Hercules between lions, flanked by the storied Pillars—announces Cádiz as a crossroads of myth and maritime power. Its heraldry resonates with the map’s larger theme: a territory where ancient routes and contemporary boundaries intersect. As a document of the dawn of the twentieth century, Cádiz records the socio-political landscape of Spain’s Restoration era, when infrastructure and administration were redrawing regional experience without effacing local identity. The refined cartouche, the disciplined color, and the conscientious symbol key all attest to a cartographer intent on authority and grace. Seen today, Martín’s sheet is both a faithful guide and a cultivated statement—a provincial portrait whose elegance serves its exactitude.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
