Titled “Lynchburg,” this U.S. Geological Survey topographical map was created in 1963 and published with a 1965 imprint, capturing the Virginia city and its surroundings at a revealing mid-century moment. Drawn at the detailed 1:24,000 scale, it presents Lynchburg not simply as a city plan, but as a landscape: a place shaped by river bends, ridgelines, valleys, roads, rail corridors, and expanding neighborhoods. The map’s red urban tint marks the built fabric of the city, while green areas indicate wooded and vegetated ground, allowing the viewer to read the balance between settlement and terrain. It is a finely structured portrait of Lynchburg during the 1960s, when American cities were being reshaped by suburban growth, highways, institutional expansion, and changing land use.

The U.S. Geological Survey, producer of this map, brought to American cartography a distinct combination of scientific rigor and visual clarity. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s principal authority on topographic mapping, geological investigation, water resources, and the measured description of the American landscape. Its quadrangle maps are admired for their precision, but also for their quiet beauty: contour lines, hydrography, roads, buildings, and vegetation are arranged into a disciplined graphic language. In “Lynchburg,” that language is especially effective, transforming a complex urban and natural setting into an intelligible field of elevations, routes, and patterns. The result is a map that feels both technical and evocative, an official document with the richness of a historical landscape study.

Lynchburg itself occupies a dramatic position along the James River, and the map makes clear how deeply the city’s form is tied to water and relief. The river, long central to transportation, industry, and regional identity, anchors the northern edge of the city’s historical geography. Around it, the terrain rises and folds into a succession of hills and valleys, rendered through closely spaced contour lines that reveal slopes, ravines, and upland neighborhoods. These contours give the map its topographic life, showing why streets bend, why development clusters on certain ridges, and how natural drainage shapes the urban plan. Streams, small water bodies, wooded parks, and open ground appear alongside the city grid, suggesting a landscape where settlement remains visibly interwoven with the Piedmont’s rolling physical character.

As a snapshot of Lynchburg in the early 1960s, the map is rich with historical context. Roads and highways trace the evolving circulation network of a growing regional center, while schools, public buildings, neighborhoods, and developed areas mark the civic and residential geography of the time. The red tint used for urbanized zones highlights the extent of mid-century development, offering a basis for comparison with the expanded metropolitan patterns of today. Parks and wooded areas, shown in green, reveal where open land still buffered districts and framed the city’s edges. The map belongs to an era when topographic quadrangles were indispensable tools for planners, engineers, travelers, and institutions, recording not only elevation and infrastructure, but the practical anatomy of American urban growth.

What gives this map particular appeal is the way it balances exact measurement with a palpable sense of place. Lynchburg’s neighborhoods, roads, hills, valleys, streams, and riverfront all emerge through the restrained elegance of USGS design, where color and line serve both function and atmosphere. The topography is not incidental decoration; it is the foundation of the city’s story, explaining movement, settlement, and the relationship between built environment and natural landform. For collectors interested in Virginia, Appalachian foothill cities, federal cartography, or twentieth-century urban history, “Lynchburg” offers a compelling view into a specific moment before later decades of expansion altered the region. It is a map of record, but also a quietly beautiful portrait of a city shaped by water, elevation, and time.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.
