Wyoming is the straightforward, resonant title that crowns George F. Cram Company’s 1925 portrait of the Equality State, and it sets the tone for a work that is both lucid and authoritative. Established in 1867 in Chicago, Cram built its reputation on clear, information-rich atlases for classrooms, boardrooms, and the traveler’s valise. Here, color-coded county boundaries interlock cleanly, each hue asserting jurisdiction without crowding its neighbors. A crisp alphanumerical grid ties locations to an index, while a legend and bar scale in miles translate symbol into sense. Latitudinal and longitudinal lines lend global coordinates to local knowledge. As a cartographic snapshot of the post–World War I West—organized by recent federal census insights—this map distills a moment when governance, resources, and mobility were rapidly redrawing the American interior.

Cram’s relief rendering uses the classic language of hachures to lift Wyoming’s formidable skeleton from the page. The Continental Divide cleaves the state, steering waters east toward the Missouri–Mississippi and west to the Colorado and Columbia systems. Mountain ranges rise in crisp strokes: the Wind River Range with Gannett Peak shouldering the skyline; the sculptural Tetons above Jackson Hole; the Bighorn Mountains corrugating the north; the Laramie Range and Sierra Madre corralling the southern basins. River systems—North Platte, Green, Snake, Wind/Bighorn, Powder, and Sweetwater—thread the basins with purpose, while Yellowstone Lake and Jackson Lake anchor the high country. Drainage patterns—so central to settlement, stock routes, and early reclamation schemes—are articulated with unhurried clarity, turning the physical geography into a legible guide to movement and resource.

Political and civic life find equal footing in this composition. Cheyenne, the state capital, is marked as a strategic hub on the high plains; Casper stands prominent as an economic engine tied to energy and services; Laramie signals its intellectual heft as home to the University of Wyoming. Rock Springs and Green River anchor the trans-basin corridor; Sheridan and Buffalo hold the Bighorn foothills; Rawlins, Douglas, and Torrington punctuate ranching and agricultural regions. Cody points the way to Yellowstone, while Evanston nods toward the Utah frontier and Jackson commands its alpine valley. Roads ribbon across basins and through passes—South Pass and Togwotee among the storied gateways—while the depiction of electric lines traces the state’s modernizing spine, binding coalfields, refineries, mills, and county seats into a coherent infrastructure map.

The historical character of 1925 Wyoming is encoded in every boundary and line. County outlines reveal a maturing administrative map—Teton County, newly carved in 1921, receives its own wash of color; Park County anchors the Yellowstone gateway; Campbell’s coal-rich terrain is cleanly defined. The atlas context pulls in up-to-date federal census data, mirroring interwar realities: expanding towns, emerging roads, and utility corridors. The main east–west roadway anticipates the numbered U.S. highway system soon to arrive, echoing the path of the famed Lincoln Highway across the southern tier from Evanston through Rock Springs, Rawlins, Laramie, and Cheyenne. In Natrona County, the Casper area’s oil landscape—shadowed by the era’s Teapot Dome intrigues—serves as a quiet subtext to the map’s careful notation of routes, rivers, and civic nodes.

Underlying it all is the George F. Cram Company’s practiced hand—an approach honed since 1867 to reconcile clarity with comprehensiveness. The firm favored disciplined color palettes for political subdivisions, indexing systems that make discovery intuitive, and symbology that rewards close looking without clutter. Hachures, a 19th-century convention, are here deployed with 20th-century purpose: they dramatize relief while preserving room for roads, towns, electric lines, and watercourses. Compiled from state and federal surveys and informed by contemporary statistical reports, Wyoming presents a balanced synthesis of nature and polity. It is a map that reads as both reference and narrative—an artifact of modern governance meeting deep geology, where every line tracks the negotiations between landscape, industry, and settlement in the American West.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
