Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 68, published in 1827, presents periwinkle—identified beneath the specimen by the French name Pervenche—as a carefully balanced study of colour, structure and growth. Two contrasting groups of flowers dominate the upright composition: vivid rose-pink blooms occupy the centre, while a paler cluster opens slightly to the right. Broad green leaves gather around them, their overlapping forms giving substance and depth to an otherwise airy arrangement.

Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for bringing close observation into harmony with exceptional compositional refinement. His flower studies belong to a period of intense European interest in botany and horticulture, when illustrated publications served scientific, educational and aesthetic purposes at once. Choix des plus belles fleurs—a title meaning “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—is characteristic of this meeting between natural history and cultivated taste: each plant is made legible as a specimen, yet arranged with the poise of an independent work of art.

A closer look

The central pink flowers provide the strongest concentration of colour. Their petals are shaded gradually rather than treated as flat silhouettes, deepening towards the centres and softening towards the edges. The neighbouring white blooms are quieter but no less carefully articulated; faint tonal changes where the petals meet their centres prevent them from disappearing into the warm cream ground. Set side by side, the two clusters allow subtle differences of hue and form to become part of the subject.

A closer inspection reveals how much of the composition depends upon the foliage. Fine veins run through the leaves, while variations in their angle and scale keep the greenery from becoming a uniform frame. Some leaves turn towards the viewer, showing their broad surfaces; others tilt away or disappear behind stems and blossoms. This restrained overlapping creates a convincing impression of volume without sacrificing botanical clarity. Near the upper right, a closed greenish bud extends beyond the principal mass of flowers, introducing another stage in the plant’s development and giving the arrangement a gently rising movement.

The generous negative space is equally important. Rather than filling the sheet, Redouté isolates the plant against a pale ground, allowing the edges of petals and leaves to remain crisply readable. At the foot of the study, the graceful handwritten label “Pervenche” acts as both identification and visual punctuation. Its flowing script contrasts with the more exacting contours above, quietly reminding us that this is at once a botanical record and a designed plate.

Context and significance

Redouté’s reputation rests on precisely this balance between accuracy and elegance. His celebrated studies of lilies, roses and other cultivated flowers helped shape the visual language of botanical illustration: specimens appear neither pressed into diagrammatic rigidity nor overwhelmed by decorative effects. Instead, their distinguishing structures are made clear through selective detail, lucid spacing and finely judged colour.

In this periwinkle study, that approach is especially evident in the relationship between the conspicuous blossoms and the less immediately noticeable information carried by bud, stem and leaf. The plate rewards both an immediate appreciation of its pink, white and green harmonies and a slower reading of the plant’s construction—an eloquent example of how nineteenth-century botanical illustration could unite scientific attention with artistic restraint.
