Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Gallica Versicolor, published in 1817, presents a striped Gallic rose at the height of its flowering. The principal bloom opens into a dense, almost circular constellation of petals, their pale pink surfaces irregularly marked with crimson-red streaks and flashes. Set slightly to the right of centre, the flower is balanced by serrated green leaves below and a succession of tightly furled buds above, while the generous cream ground gives every stem, thorn and contour room to be studied.

Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, admired for reconciling scientific clarity with remarkable pictorial refinement. This study belongs to the period of his influential floral series Les Roses, published between 1817 and 1824, in which cultivated and wild roses were treated as both botanical specimens and individual portraits. Such works emerged from a culture increasingly concerned with identifying, classifying and recording plant life, yet Redouté’s roses never feel reduced to diagrams: their accuracy is inseparable from an acute sensitivity to colour, balance and growth.

A closer look

The open rose provides the composition’s visual centre, but its striped colouring prevents it from settling into perfect symmetry. Deeper red markings run unevenly through the petals, sometimes appearing as narrow veins and elsewhere as broader, flame-like passages. Fine lines distinguish the overlapping folds, while gentle tonal transitions describe petals that curl outward, turn into shadow or gather tightly around the flower’s core. The result conveys the bloom’s layered structure without losing its softness.

Above and to the right, several buds record earlier stages in the rose’s development. Their richer reds are held within pointed green sepals, forming compact accents beside the expansive central flower. The branch rises on a diagonal, giving the otherwise carefully poised arrangement a sense of organic movement. Smaller leaves frame the bloom, their overlapping forms creating modest depth against the unmodulated background.

The foliage is rendered with a different kind of precision. Pronounced central ribs divide the leaves, from which networks of finer veins extend towards sharply toothed edges. Shading deepens around folds and overlaps, producing greens that range from fresh yellowish notes to cooler, darker tones. Tiny irregularities along the margins—and delicate droplets visible on parts of the foliage—temper the formal elegance with close observation of a living plant. In the lower margin, the identification reads “Rosa Gallica Versicolor, Rosier de France à fleurs panachées”, linking the specimen’s Latin name with a descriptive French designation.

Context and significance

Botanical illustration in Redouté’s era occupied a productive space between science and art. A plate needed to communicate recognisable features—flower form, leaf structure, buds and habit of growth—while also meeting the aesthetic expectations of finely produced natural-history publications. Redouté’s particular distinction lay in making those aims mutually reinforcing. Here, the uncluttered ground assists identification, but it also turns the isolated branch into an elegant arabesque; the sequence from leaves to buds to open flower conveys botanical development while creating a carefully controlled visual rhythm.

Rosa Gallica Versicolor is especially memorable for the tension between order and variation. The plate is lucid and restrained, yet the striped petals introduce continual surprise: no two markings follow quite the same course. It is this union of disciplined observation and cultivated grace that gives Redouté’s flower studies their enduring appeal to admirers of roses, gardens and the history of botanical art.
