Step into the vibrant world of 1930s America with "Washington," a captivating pictorial map crafted by the talented Ruth Taylor White in 1935. This original work, part of a celebrated series of whimsical state maps, is a delightful marriage of artistry and geography, designed to enchant both collectors and connoisseurs of historical cartography. The map’s original title, simply "Washington," hints at its elegant focus: a lively, imaginative portrayal of the Evergreen State, bursting with color and character. Each county is thoughtfully delineated, while the entire surface teems with charming illustrations that bring the region’s unique culture and history to life.
Ruth Taylor White’s artistry is immediately evident in the map’s playful, cartoon-like style, which transforms Washington’s geography into a visual feast. The map is adorned with vibrant depictions of the state’s most iconic natural features: the snow-capped majesty of Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens, the rugged expanse of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, and the winding course of the mighty Columbia River. Along the Pacific coastline, maritime scenes and ships evoke the state’s enduring connection to the sea, while the lush, forested interior is brought to life with images of lumberjacks and the thriving timber industry.
This map is more than a geographical document—it is a cultural snapshot of Washington in the 1930s. The illustrations celebrate the region’s rich heritage, from Native American motifs to the bustling fish canneries and legendary salmon runs. Agricultural abundance is on full display, with apple orchards and wheat fields rendered in vivid detail, capturing the essence of the state’s rural economy. The construction of the Grand Coulee Dam, a marvel of its era, is also depicted, symbolizing the spirit of innovation and progress that defined Washington during this period.
Beyond its natural and industrial highlights, "Washington" is a tapestry of human settlement and activity. The map features a constellation of towns and cities—Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and many more—each carefully placed and labeled. These urban centers, now some of the most populous in the Pacific Northwest, are shown in their historical context, offering a fascinating glimpse into the state’s development over time. Recreational pursuits, from skiing in the mountains to boating on the Puget Sound, further enrich the narrative, making this map a lively celebration of both place and people.
The historical significance of this map lies not only in its detailed depiction of Washington’s landscape and communities but also in its unique artistic vision. As part of a broader movement in American pictorial cartography, Ruth Taylor White’s work stands as a testament to the era’s optimism, creativity, and sense of regional pride. "Washington" is a rare and delightful artifact—a window into the past that continues to inspire wonder and admiration in all who encounter it.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
