Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Berberifolia, dated 1817 and published during the period 1817–24, presents an unusually spare and graceful rose study. A slender branch rises diagonally across the pale ground, carrying three open yellow flowers whose deep brown centres form the composition’s strongest accents. Rather than the densely petalled blooms more readily associated with roses, these flowers are broad, simple and exposed, their fine stamens clearly visible. The measured spacing of blossom, bud and foliage gives the plant a poised, almost calligraphic rhythm.

Redouté was among the most admired botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for reconciling scientific description with pictorial elegance. Often known as the “Raphael of flowers”, he worked within a flourishing culture of botanical study in France, when cultivated plants were documented for specialists and introduced to a wider audience through ambitious illustrated publications. This plate belongs to his renowned studies of roses, issued between 1817 and 1824. Its clarity reflects the documentary purpose of botanical art, yet the careful orchestration of stem and empty space ensures that the specimen never appears merely diagrammatic.

A closer look

The branch begins low on the page and extends towards the upper right, creating movement without disturbing the plate’s quiet balance. Small green leaves emerge at regular intervals, their pointed forms and serrated edges described with minute precision. Subtle shifts from yellow-green to deeper olive suggest the turning of each leaf, while fine veins, delicate hairs and touches of shadow articulate the plant’s structure. The stem itself remains slender but distinct, its brown-green tone acting as a subdued link between the brighter flowers and foliage.

At the upper centre, the three principal blooms are shown at slightly different angles and stages of opening. Their petals pass from luminous lemon yellow at the edges to warmer tones near the dark central markings. Within each flower, tiny clustered stamens create a ring of intricate detail, contrasting with the broad, lightly modelled petals around them. The layering of leaves and flowers establishes a modest sense of depth, though the plant remains fully legible as a botanical specimen.

A closed bud lower on the branch extends the study beyond the flower at its peak, while a small detached element near the lower portion introduces another stage in the plant’s cycle. The warm off-white ground is left almost entirely unmarked, allowing even the finest contours to remain visible. Along the lower edge, the caption identifies the subject as “Rosa Berberifolia” and gives the French name “Rosier à feuilles d’Épine-vinette” — literally, a rose with barberry-like leaves. That label draws attention to one of the study’s most distinctive features: the compact, sharply defined foliage.

Context and significance

Botanical illustration of Redouté’s period had to serve two demands at once. It needed sufficient accuracy for the recognition and comparison of plants, but it also belonged to a refined visual culture in which natural history publications were valued for their artistry. Redouté’s particular gift lay in making those purposes appear inseparable. Here, the diagnostic details — leaf arrangement, bud, open flower and reproductive structures — are incorporated into an exceptionally economical composition.

Rosa Berberifolia is especially compelling for its restraint. Bright yellow, dark brown and nuanced green are concentrated within a narrow diagonal, surrounded by generous negative space. The result is both an exacting natural-history study and a remarkably modern-looking arrangement, rewarding close attention to the tiny hairs, veins and tonal transitions that animate its seemingly simple form.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
