Seen by the Hubble Space Telescope at a distance of 100 million light-years, the galaxy is markedly asymmetrical: a brilliant core and tightly worked inner structure occupy the left of the composition, while long, delicate extensions reach into the surrounding blackness.
Blue light dominates the galaxy’s contorted form, interrupted by warm orange patches and narrow regions of shadow. The brightest material appears concentrated around the centre, where luminous arcs curl around darker folds. Farther out, the structure becomes finer and more tenuous, dissolving into filaments rather than ending at a clean boundary. The generous darkness to the right gives these outer traces room to register, while a faint elongated object near the edge adds a quieter counterpoint to the main galaxy.
Officially classified as an interacting galaxy system, Arp 284 is remarkable here for the visible irregularity of its structure. Instead of a neat, evenly balanced disc, the image presents a galaxy stretched into arcs, knots and trailing strands—a complex form whose disturbed appearance is particularly compelling at large scale.
A closer look
Near the nucleus, the image is at its most densely layered. A compact white-blue glow sits amid darker channels and mottled orange light, creating the impression of depth within the central region. Around it, the blue structure broadens into uneven curves, some sharply defined and others fading gradually into grey-black space.
Along the upper edge of the galaxy, a slender blue filament threads through a much darker region. Towards the far left, bright and shadowed material meet abruptly, revealing a finely textured boundary rather than a smooth outline. Below the centre, softer orange tones mingle with cooler blue-grey forms, while small red and white points punctuate the wider field.
The image’s scale of presentation brings out these changes in texture: the concentrated brilliance of the core, the intricate surrounding shadows and the extremely faint outer strands. What first appears to be a single sweep of blue light resolves into a complicated arrangement of narrow ridges, diffuse patches and isolated points.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
