This Victorian masterpiece map of ports and harbours of the northern United States of America, with its rich original handcolouring, was first published in 1872 by A. Fullarton & Co. in its seminal Royal Illustrated Atlas. The map was engraved by G.H Swanston and is notable for being the last great highly decorative world atlas.
This map shows 6 separate views of the ports and harbours of the northern US.
Before European settlement, the Hudson River served as a significant trade route northward to Canada and westward to the Great Lakes and has a long history of transport and recreation.
The Europeans recognised the Boston Harbour as one of the finest natural harbours thanks to its depth and natural defence from the Atlantic due to the many islands surrounding it. The harbour also played an essential part in importing and exporting goods and supplies during the Revolutionary War in 1775 .
Some of the locations on this map include: Hudson River, Portland Harbour, Boston Harbour, New York Harbour, Delaware River, Patapsco River, New York Harbour, Long Island, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston and Portland.
This map looks great at all sizes: 18x12in (46x30.5cm), 18x24in (45.5x61cm), 24x36in (61x91.5cm), 30x45in (76x114.5cm), 33x50in (84x127cm), 40x60in (102x153cm) and 47x70in (120x178cm), but it looks best at larger sizes.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in ports and harbours of the northern United States of America or someone who has lived next to these ports.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
