This masterful map of Venice was originally published in 1838. It was created by W.B. Clarke for the Society for Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK).
Published over 180 years ago, this map of Venice shows what the city would have looked like in the 19th century. After Venice had been conquered and looted by France in 1797, France gave the city to Austria to control shortly after. During this time, Venice was known as Lombardy-Venetia, as it was an Austrian-held Kingdom.
As well as the canal routes and islands, you can also spot the famous buildings of the Floating City, which are highlighted in red, such as St Mark's Basilica, Rialto Bridge, and Basilica S.Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
The SDUK was an early Victorian era attempt at disseminating educational materials to those who could not afford formal education.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18in (30.5x46cm), 18x24in (45.5x61cm), 24x36in (61x91.5cm), 30x45in (76x114.5cm), 33x50in (84x127cm), 40x60in (102x153cm) and 47x70in (120x178cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100in (254cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (61x91.5cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
The labels on this map are very small at 12x16in (30.5x41cm). The map is still very attractive, but you may struggle to read the smallest letters. Please buy a larger map if it's important to be able to read the map easily.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Venice by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg in 1572.
Some of the locations, landmarks or interesting features on this map include: Giudecca, San Giorgio Maggiore, Canale di San Giorgio, San Pietro di Castello, Canale di San Pietro, Grand Canal, San Marco, San Biasio and Rialto Bridge.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Venice or someone interested in the history of the Venetian Lagoon.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
