This is a very fine example of the very first atlas map of the British Isles by Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius in 1595. This map was originally handcoloured more than 425 years ago and has been lovingly restored by The Unique Maps Co.
Curiously oriented to the west, with Great Britain laying horizontally in a way that you've probably never seen before, this is one of the finest and rarest old maps of what would eventually become the British Isles.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90 inches (230cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The cartography is fairly accurate for Scotland, England and Wales - but unfortunately Ireland looks a bit like a potato, with very little detail of its western coast.
Hadrian's Wall is rather strikingly illuminated as a dark red line that separates England and Scotland.
And of course, hundreds of towns and cities are marked on the map. Zoom into the listing images and see if you can spot your hometown! Please message me if you want to confirm if a certain place is visible on the map.
This map of the British Isles would make a perfect gift for someone from the UK or Ireland, or perhaps someone who has spent a lot of time there. Or it would look great as wall art on your own walls! It's a beautiful piece of wall art that would make a good housewarming gift.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
